Through the Diploma in Photojournalism ACFJ seeks to form photojournalists who gather news with a critical mind and possess a mastery of the craft, an awareness of the power of images and a reverence for truth.
Program of Study
To earn the Diploma in Photojournalism the requirements are 3 core courses, 3-4 electives and a portfolio.
Core Courses
Fundamentals of Photojournalism
A general introduction to the strategies and genres of work within photojournalism. Combining lecture and field projects, the course will dwell on the history of photojournalism, photographic technique, aesthetics, style, the fundamental approaches to producing images for newspapers, magazines as well as other contexts such as long-term documentary projects and web-based interactive works alongside agency work. Recent trends and the appreciation and critiquing of photographs will likewise be discussed.
Newsgathering and Reporting for Photojournalists
An intensive review and practice of basic and advanced news writing. Covers news judgment, interviewing and research skills, writing of captions and different news genres. Discusses the tenets of responsible journalism and the dynamics of the newsroom.
Ethical and Legal Issues in Photojournalism
An introduction to the philosophical aspects, traditions, values and ethics of photojournalism, Discusses the place of photojournalism
in the news organization. Covers issues such as conflict of interest, image manipulation, staging, misrepresentation,
privacy, copyright and other relevant laws.

Portfolio
From the time they enter the program, the students, under the guidance of an adviser, begin to build a portfolio that will showcase their best works.
The program begins in June 2007, and follows the university’s school calendar.
Eligibility for Admission
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following qualifi cations:
1. Citizen and resident of the Philippines
2. Not more than 35 years old
3. At least one (1) full year of work experience as a photojournalist, photo editor, photographer or journalist
4. A college graduate with an average of B or higher
5. Profi ciency in oral and written English
6. Profi ciency in editing software such as Photoshop and in Internet skills
7. Access to a digital single lens refl ex (SLR) camera system and a computer with Internet connection
and industry-standard photo-editing programs
Application Form and Supporting Documents
The application form (Form 1) must be submitted with the following documents. All forms are available at the “Downloads” section of http://acfj.ateneo.edu
a. Curriculum vitae with 2” x 2” ID photo
b. Transcript of records (college degree)
c. Certifi cation of Employment using the prescribed form (Form 2)
d. A portfolio consisting of 10-15 single photographs and if possible, one photo story (with
8-10 photos) to be submitted in a CD in JPG format (minimum size: 1200x800 pixels; minimum resolution: 72 – 200 dpi)
f. Minimum of 20, maximum of 30 digitized tear sheets of works published during the work period
g. Learning Needs and Skills Assessment Form (Form 3)
To be considered for screening, applicants must submit the completed application form and all required support documents. Applicants must keep copies of all documents submitted. Fees
Tuition fee is P10,700.-- per course.
Scholarships
ACFJ with the support of the World Press Photo offers 10 scholarships (full and partial) to applicants who have qualifi ed for admission. Please see eligibility requirements on the scholarship form (Form 4). Applicants must fulfill qualifi cations listed on the scholarship form and submit it with the corresponding requirements to the address stated below.
Deadline
Application forms and supporting documents must be submitted by Saturday, 31 March 2007 to the address below. If mailed, the documents should be postmarked on the same day.
